Plans to transform Aylesbury have taken another step forward this week, with news of additional government funding for the Garden Town Programme. Nine million pounds is to be divided between 21 areas of key growth across the UK, that are being developed as Garden Communities. Aylesbury is one of these, with just over 16,000 new homes being built within the town by 2033 and it will receive a further £420,000 from the Ministry of Housing to continue work on the project.
The funding will help support the Masterplanning process that sets out the framework for the future of the town. The aim is to create well designed, sustainable communities, with quality green spaces and new local job opportunities. The town centre is also a focal point, with plans to invest further in its regeneration, to create a vibrant central hub for Aylesbury, adding to attractions such as the Waterside Theatre and new Exchange development. The money will also benefit shorter term initiatives including improving cycle paths in the town, introducing new healthy walking routes and piloting a community growing scheme.
Tracey Aldworth, Chair of the Aylesbury Garden Town Programme Team and Delivery Board Member said, “We are delighted to hear that the government has committed to the next stage of funding for the Aylesbury Garden Town project. These are exciting times for Aylesbury, as the town grows considerably over the next decade and beyond. We want to make sure this growth happens in a manageable, well-planned and sustainable way and government support is key to making this happen.”
Delivery Board Member, Neil Gibson, added, “Garden Town status has given Aylesbury a major opportunity. Our Masterplan, which is being developed with extensive community engagement, will set out what people want to see in the future. This additional funding will help progress the Masterplan, so that the vision for the town can move closer to becoming a reality.”
The draft Masterplan for Aylesbury Garden Town is due to go to public consultation later this year. More information about the Aylesbury Garden Town Programme can be found at aylesburygardentown.co.uk
